• Faculty of Commerce BIDS FAREWELL TO THE FINAL YEAR STUDENTS…

A grand farewell function was organised by the institute on 31st March, 2017, to bid adieu to the Semester 6 students. It was a warm evening, not only owing to the approaching summer, but the warmth of the everlasting bond between yet another batch of students and the institute. The arrangements included a pleasant set up in the GLS lawns for a musical evening followed by dinner. The students swayed and danced through the musical rendering of Mihir Jani and group. There was a small formal function in which two of the student representatives, Parikshit Tamalia and Sanjana Mukharjee expressed their experiences in the college during the past three years. They acknowledged the huge contribution of the institute in shaping of their personalities and the discovery of their hidden talents. Dean Dr.Ashwin Purohit, blessed the students and wished them all the very best for their future. Dr.L.S.Pathak, the Principal of Shri I.M.Nanavati Law College also graced the function with his kind presence. Students clicked pictures and selfies with the faculty members to preserve the fond memories of the institute. The evening reached to the conclusion with a dinner with delicious delicacies.

• PARENT TEACHER MEET-2017

Faculty of Commerce Parent Teacher meeting for the 2017 was held on 31ST March in G-1 class room from 9.00 am to 10:30 am. There were around 80 students along with their parents who attended the meeting. The function started with the address by Dean Dr.Ashwin Purohit followed by introduction of faculty members, glimpses of achievements and events of 2016-17 presented in an Audio-Visual manner and refreshments. The parents were also invited to give feedback and valuable suggestions wherein they really appreciated the efforts and the involvement of faculty members in all the academic as well as co-curricular activities.

• TRAFFIC AWARENESS DRIVE

On 25thMarch, 2017, 40 NSS volunteers of Faculty of Commerce, (SMPIC) GLS University conducted the “Traffic Awareness Drive” with the kind support of Traffic Police Ahmedabad. This Drive was conducted at Panchvati Circle, C.G Road, Ahmedabad from 9 AM to 11 AM. Students displayed banners at crossroad depicting various traffic rules. Students also felicitated citizens with roses who were following the traffic rules by wearing helmet, Seat belt etc. The Police Officials were also offered roses and a souvenir (a book written by Gandhiji) for their kind support. This Drive was successfully conducted under the NSS UNIT of the College.

•  ‘PHENOMENAL WOMEN-A TRIBUTE TO WOMANHOOD’: INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY CELEBRATION

Faculty of Commerce, under CWDC celebrated International Women’s Day by organizing a seminar ‘Phenomenal Women- A Tribute to Womanhood’ on 8th March, 2017, in H. H. Auditorium from 9.00 a.m. to 10.30 a.m. Ms. Vaibhavi Nanavati, Advocate, High Court of Gujarat was the Chairperson. In the seminar, we honoured the influential women stalwarts like Mrs. Smita Shastri, Dance Guru, Nartan school of Classical Dances, Ms. Ruzan Khambhatta, a Serial Entrepreneur and a crusader of Women Empowerment and Smt. Vibhaben Desai, a retired Additional Commissioner, Income tax department and a well- known singer of Gujarati Sugam sangeet. We felicitated the power and struggle of these phenomenal women who have broken all the barriers and reached the pinnacle of success. Further, these phenomenal women shared their experiences, their journey towards name and fame and inspired our students to realize the unlimited potential that they have. Ganesh vandana and Natraj Vandana was performed by Prashita Surana, a disciple of Smt. Smita Shastri. A skit ‘Her body, her Right’ was performed by students of Faculty of Commerce. At the end, Mr. Dinesh Bahl from Blind Men’s Association spread the awareness amongst students about organ donation.

•  PRABANDH-THE TALENT SHOWCASE

Faculty of Commerce organized ‘Prabandh-the talent showcase’, a one day Management Festival under Management Club on 16th February 2017. It was comprised of various competitions like IPL Auction, Quick Business Plan, Logical Quiz and Press Conference. It was a paperless event, wherein from registration to certificates process was digitalized. 70 students participated enthusiastically. It was an attempt to enhance students’ interest and willingness in participating in competitions that require managerial skills like prompt decision making and speaking in public on managerial issues. The event was coordinated by Dr. Krupa Bhatt.

•  FACETS 2017

Faculty of Commerce celebrated its Annual Culfest – Facets 2017 at Tagore Hall on 11th February 2017. In great style the show was a blend of Music, Western Dance and Fashion. The theme of this year’s show was ‘FUSION’. Shri Sudhir Nanavati (President GLS University) was the chief guest of the function. Mr. Arvind Vegda ‘Bhai Bhai’ fame had graced the occasion. Mr. Keyur Desai, and Mr. Paresh Pahuja were the judges of the event. More than 100 students participated in the show amidst the loud cheering of 800 plus audience.

•  COMMEMORATION OF KHAN ABDUL GHAFFAR KHAN’S BIRTH ANNIVERSARY

On 6th February; 2017, the 127th Birth Anniversary of Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan, also known as “Frontier Gandhi” was celebrated in a unique way as never before by the students of Faculty of Commerce. The Rally was organized from Gandhi Ashram, Sabarmati to Jagannath Mandir, Jamalpur by the Organizers. Under the kind support of faculty in charge of “Forum for Gandhian Philosophy” Prof. Vijay Tripathti, 20 Students participated in the rally. Students distributed pamphlets during the rally on their route to all people and spread the message of unity amongst all the castes and religions. This event was conducted under the “Forum for Gandhian Philosophy” of the College.

•  INFORMATIVE SEMINAR ON PASSPORT MAKING BY TCS

Tata Consultancy Services in collaboration with Government of India has initiated a project of making passport. On 27th December, 2016 representatives from TCS conducted an informative seminar wherein 150 students participated for understanding the procedure of making passport. TCS also proposed to keep a Passport camp for our college students at our premises so that students can get their passport prepared without any hassles.

•  A LECTURE ON ANCIENT WISDOM AND MODERN SCIENCE

Faculty of Commerce organized a lecture with power point presentation by Prof. Om Prakash Pandey, former professor of physics, Kolkata University, on 12th January, 2016. He talked about ‘ANCIENT WISDOM AND MODERN SCIENCE’. In a very lucid manner, he unveiled the secrets of universe and their descriptions in our ancient Hindu scriptures to the commerce students.

•  MASTER CHEF COMPETITION

Faculty of Commerce conducted a Master Chef Competition on 3rd January, 2017. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation of various teams. Around 15 teams of Boys and Girls prepared a variety of delicacies like Paneer Toofani, Lachcha Paratha, Rissoto, Dates, Apricot and Coffee Biscuits, French Toast etc. The students showcased not only the art of preparing dishes but also plating and garnishing within the specified time-limit. The winners will be awarded with the certificates.

•  Faculty of Commerce FELICITATES CHAMPIONS OF 2015-16

In a swanky function organised on 31st December, 2016, the talented, dedicated and enthusiastic students were warmly felicitated who brought accolades to the institute in academics, sports and co-curricular activities. The function was organised at the H.H (GLS) Auditorium at 10 am. Dr.Anamik Shah, Vice Chancellor of Gujarat Vidyapith was the Chief Guest of the function while Shri Sudhirbhai Nanavati, President, GLS University had graced the occasion as the president of the function. Dr. B.H. Joshi, Provost, GLS University, Dr. Hitesh Ruparel, Director General, GLS University and Dr.Dharmesh Shah, Registrar, GLS University had also remained present to encourage the young achievers. Dr. Ashwin Purohit, Dean, Faculty of Commerce, mentioned about the motto of the institute dedicated to the overall development of the students. The Chief Guest Dr.Anamik Shah, VC, Gujarat Vidyapith, congratulated the winners and appreciated the efforts of the institute. He expressed the need for the interaction between the two institutes. Shri Sudhirbhai Nanavati praised the efforts of the students, the staff and the Dean of the institute and motivated to achieve more and more success in future. At the end, some special awards like Best Student, Best Sports Person, Best NSS Volunteer etc. were declared and the winners were felicitated by Shri Sudhirbhai Nanavati.

•  FINE ARTS COMPETITIONS

In-house Fine Arts Competitions were held from 27th December to 30th December 2016. Students participated in events of Mehndi, Poster making, Cartooning, On the Spot Painting and Rangoli. Topics like Global warming, Landscape, Elections etc. were given on the spot. Around 20 students participated enthusiastically. Winners will be awarded with the certificates.

•  CHARITY WEEK AND DAYS CELEBRATION

Charity Day :: 24th Dec.16
Visit by municipal school children to our college.
(Around 40 municipal school students were brought to college campus by professors in cars. Our students played games, served them with food and gifted hampers having compass box, water bottle and other stationery items.)
-‘Oath taking’ for the spread of knowledge of cashless transactions.
(CA Shri Jainik Vakil guided the students regarding Cashless India and Shri Sudhir Nanavati, President, GLS University led the oath ceremony towards creating Digital India.)

•  SPORTS DAY

Faculty of Commerce enthusiastically celebrated Sports Day on 26th December, 2016 at Sheth C. N. Vidhyavihar in which more than 500 students participated in various sports and games like Sprint, Discus Throw, Short Put,Long Jump. Winners were awarded with certificates.

•  AWARENESS ON CASHLESS TRANSACTIONS IN INDIA

Understanding the need of spreading awareness regarding cashless transaction to make India a cashless economy, GLS University’s Faculty of Commerce organised a programme on “Creating Awareness on Various ways and means to do Cashless Transactions”. This programme was the brain child of Dean Dr.Ashwin Purohit. It was conducted on 24th December, 2016 in GLS Auditorium in collaboration with ‘Central Bank of India’. Chief Manager Shri S N Murti and CA Shri JainikVakil guided the students regarding the advantages of Cashless Transactions and Digital India. Shri Sudhir Nanavati, President, GLS University led the oath ceremony taken by 400 students to create awareness about Digital Economy.

•  INDUSTRIAL VISIT TO MUNDRA PORT

Faculty of Commerce organised a two day Industrial Visit to Mundra Port under Adani Act (an initiative of Adani Foundation) on 19th and 20th November, 2016 in which 80 students visited the port along with 4 in-charge faculty members. The students visited the Adani Wilmar Refinery wherein the students learned about the manufacturing as well as packaging of various types of edible oil. The students were also given hampers of Fortune Cooking oil bottle. Next day, the students were taken to Adani port wherein they were informed about the various facilities of the port and functioning of jetties. Then the students visited Adani Power Plant where they learned about electricity generation, coal preservation and recycling of sea water used for electricity generation. The students stayed at ‘Shantivihar’- a green and peaceful campus maintained by Adani in Mundra. The industrial visit was quite an educative experience for the students.

•  HEALTHY CAMPUS AWARD

On the occasion of “Healthy Campus Leaders Meet” hosted by Narcotics Control bureau, MSW Department- Gujarat University jointly at the Gujarat University Convention Hall organized a special program of felicitating the leaders who have done extraordinary work in creating awareness and spreading the word of Healthy Campus in various arenas on 25th October 2016. Prof. Vijay Tripathi, the Faculty Coordinator of Faculty of Commerce was felicitated by state level award by Prof. G.P.Vadodaria, the Dean of L.D.ENGINEERING College. Along with this, volunteers Malav Baria, Swapnil Gurjar, Moh. Burhan, Yaser bhavnagri, Vishrut Kevadiya, Shanker Chaudhary were also felicitated during the event.

•  “Yaad Karo Qurbani..” our students call out and celebrates independence

Following the tradition to inculcate the spirit of patriotism among the students, FOC organised a show of patriotic songs on 13th August, 2016. The show was entirely managed and performed by the students on their own. The talented students of the college sang various patriotic songs and also gave music.

The stalwarts of the field, Shri Salil Mehta and Shri Saumil Munshi graced the occasion and motivated the young budding talents. While Shri Salil Mehta emphasised on hard work along with talent to achieve success in life, Shri Saumil Munshi appreciated the effort put by the students and praised their talent. It was like a cherry on the pie as he too sang a couple of songs. The conceiver of the show, Dean Dr. Ashwin Purohit explained the students the true value of our independence and said that it is their job now to preserve it for the future generations in its true spirit. The audience was mesmerised with the performances by the students.

•  A VISIT TO GANDHI ASHRAM

To connect students with Gandhian philosophy, FOC organized a visit to Gandhi Ashram on 8th Aug, 2016 i.e. Monday under the Forum for Gandhian Philosophy. More than 200 students participated in the various activities conducted at Gandhi Ashram like Quiz competition, Tree plantation, Photography competition etc. A special lecture on life of Mahatma Gandhi was conducted by ashram authorities to inculcate value of Gandhian Philosophy. Dean Dr. Ashwin Purohit with other faculty members visited Ashram to encourage students to conduct such activities.

•  BLOOD DONATION CAMP

FOC in collaboration with Red Cross society organized Blood Donation Camp on 5th August, 2016. Large number of students participated in the drive to make the event successful. Students, faculties and non-teaching staff donated 80 units of blood. This drive was conducted by the NSS department of the college.

•  FACULTY OF COMMERCE’S (SMPIC) PARTICIPATION TOWARDS GREEN AHMEDABAD

FOC students participated in Tree Plantation Drive on 4th August, 2016. More than 300 students participated in the drive organized by Madadgar Parivar. More than 300 students planted tree on the day to ensure Green Ahmedabd Drive.

•  FINE ARTS WORKSHOP

FOC organised five day Fine Arts workshop for the third consecutive year which commenced from 9th August 2016. The unique feature of this workshop was that all arts were taught by Faculty of Commerce students. The workshop covered Chocolate and Cake making, Paper Quilling, Calligraphy and Lamasa. The idea behind this workshop was that the teaching students get the platform and encouragement and the benefitting students learn a variety of skills in the college itself. The workshop was coordinated by Prof. Rajul Goenka.

•  PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP

FOC’s (SMPIC) Five day Photography workshop was held from 3rd August 2016. Renowned faculty, Mr. Haard Dave had conducted this workshop in which 40 students participated. All the aspects of photography like Golden Rule, Framing, Object Balancing, Capturing the emotions etc. were covered. For practical training, students were taken to outdoor sites like Gandhi Ashram and historical places of Ahmedabad. Apart from giving knowledge about various cameras and lenses, clicking photos from smart phones and various applications available were also taught. The workshop was coordinated by Prof. Rajul Goenka.

•  THEATRE WORKSHOP 2016

FOC successfully organized “ABHIVYAKTI: A FINISHING WORKSHOP IN THEATRE”, for the 7th consecutive year. The workshop was organised by Abhishek Shah, Dr. Sneha Master and Dr. Gitanjali Rampal. The six days workshop was conducted from 27th July, 2016 to 2nd August, 2016.

The workshop dealt with basics of theatre, music, dance, creative writing and stagecraft. Various aspects of drama, including acting, voice modulation, breathing control and reflex enhancing were taught by the theatre enthusiasts like Arjav Trivedi (Dhulo of Chello Divas) and Chirag Tripathi (Radio Mirchi fame). Around 70 Students from FOC were benefited from the workshop.

The workshop took off with a sharing of the participants’ theatre related experiences in the past. Participants were briefly oriented about the evolution and history of theatre. The session helped provoke a rethink on the need of the kind of theatre and its scope among the youth. The sessions were enlivened by various theatre exercises and games which allowed inhibitions to drop even as it built in a discipline among the participants and demonstrate the same in their interaction with others.

On the last day of the workshop, the students visited H. K. Auditorium for experience of stage, back stage, lights etc. In the closing ceremony, Shri Subhash Brahmbhatt, Principal, H. K. Arts College addressed the students with his insightful speech various nuances of theatre the workshop was a huge success.

•  Workshop on Gender Sensitization

The institute organized a ‘Workshop on Gender Sensitization’ under CWDC on 23rd July, 2016, Saturday. The workshop was conducted by Dr. Shweta Rao Garg, Asst. Professor, DAIICT, Gandhinagar. The workshop aimed at dismantling the students’ unexamined notions on gender relationships and questions the established norms. The workshop explained the key concepts of gender and sexuality through visual and written material, role play, interactive games etc. The workshop helped students to not only identify and complain about sexual harassment without stigma, but also brought awareness about being open to differences, maintaining dignity of the self and other, developing a critical attitude towards gender stereotypes in society and mass media. 60 students were benefitted by the seminar.

•  Celebration of Gurupurnima

Every year students at FOC celebrate ‘Gurupurnima’ in a grand manner and the tradition continued this year too. The auspicious day of Gurupurnima, 19th July, 2016 was celebrated in the college campus with lots of pomp, grandeur and sheer love for their ‘gurus’. The teachers were taken by surprise to witness a nicely decorated staffroom with torans of the photographs of the Dean and faculty members. The college was buzzing with enthusiastic, traditionally dressed students busy decorating the college with flowers, hangings and a beautiful rangoli in the middle of the entrance of the college. When the celebrations began, Dean, faculty members with office staff and peons were invited amidst pounding noises of dhol-nagaras, the loving and cheerful shouts of students and recitation of the most revered prayer ‘ guru brahma guru vishnu’. It was followed by showering of flowers, worshipping them with a traditionally decorated Aarti thaal, a cake cutting ceremony and presenting Dean and faculty members with an innovative personalized memento and a plant as their token of love and gratitude. The students showed their respect and love towards the office staff members and peons by gifting them with lunch boxes. Students held grand and magnificent celebrations showing their reverence and love for their mentors and keeping the ‘Guru-Shishya’ parampara alive in the modern age.

•  DANCE AND GROOMING WORKSHOP 2016

Dance and Grooming 9 day Workshop commenced from 18th July 2016. Workshop was a combination of stage presence and confidence building tips required for ramp walk plus a parody of Bollywood dance. This workshop provided platform to around 65 students to learn and highlight their talents.

•  FOLK DANCE WORKSHOP 2016

The institute organized Folk Dance Workshop from 12th to 16th July, 2016 .Total 60 students participated in the workshop. The workshop was conducted by a renowned choreographer Kuldeep Shukla and an alumni of FOC. The workshop included authentic and traditional folk steps of Garba, Raas, Thaali dance , Rajasthani and free style steps . On the last day of the workshop students gave solo folk performance to showcase their talent. Everyone participated with lot of enthusiasm and zeal through out the workshop. The folk dance workshop was coordinated by Prof Kruti Paritosh.

•  Orientation Function for the new entrants of FOC

On 27th, 28th and 29th of June, 2016, the institute organised orientation programme for the students of Semester-1 joining FOC from the academic year 2016-2017. Students and their parents were invited for the function that was aimed at imparting important information regarding Syllabus, examination pattern etc. as well as making them aware about the glorious past and present of FOC. The students were shown an audio visual presentation about the previous year’s activities as well as achievements of FOC. The Vice-Principal, Dr.Marzun Jokhi made a power point presentation to explain about the syllabus, the structure of B.Com. Programme, examination pattern etc. He also explained about FOC’s international collaborations like CIMA, UK and Concordia College, New York. The Dean, Dr. Ashwin Purohit welcomed the new students as well as their parents to the institute and motivated the students to take advantage of various activities held at the institute. He explained the importance of classroom. “You can learn about academic topics any where else but the more important are the lessons of life which you will only learn in classrooms”, he added. He also mentioned about the charity activities carried out by the institute and put emphasis on the mission to prepare good citizens along with professional excellence, through value based education. At the end, the Dean solved the queries of students as well as their parents.

•  INTERNATIONAL YOGA DAY CELEBRATION

On 21st June, 2016 Faculty of Commerce, GLS UNIVERSITY celebrated INTERNATIONAL YOGA DAY at GLS campus. Around 300 students with Faculty members, Heads of various institutes of GLS University participated and actively performed different Asanas for more than an hour as taught and demonstrated by the professional instructor.
