• FACULTY OF COMMERCE BIDS FAREWELL TO ITS FIRST BATCH..!!

12th April, 2018 was a special day for both, the institute and for the students. As the institute prepared to say a formal ‘good bye’ to its first graduating batch under the celebrated banner of GLS University, there were mixed feelings in the atmosphere. The emotions like pride, pleasure and pain, prevailed together as Faculty of Commerce was ready to present before the world, the smart and sensitive graduates prepared under GLS University. The students were also overheard discussing, how they would miss the college days and that they couldn’t believe their precious three years passed in no time. A grand farewell function was organised on 12th April, 2018. The students as well as the faculty members were eagerly looking forward to the function which was fun-filled with music, dance and a lot of enjoyment. The pain of parting was soothed by the pleasing and entertaining atmosphere. Dean Dr. Ashwin Purohit blessed the students with the best wishes for their bright future. Students expressed their gratitude for the institute and conveyed their determination to spread the glory of GLS University. The function concluded with delicious delicacies in the dinner.

• VISIT TO GUJARAT VIDHYAPITH

A group of students from the Faculty of Commerce NSS Division had an educational visit at Gujarat’s iconic institution Gujarat Vidhyapith on 15th February 2018, to understand the different teaching methods and activities carried out besides brilliant academics. The students were also fortunate to have an interactive session with the Vice Chancellor of Vidhyapith which was informative and motivating.

• FACETS 2018

Faculty of Commerce celebrated its Annual Culfest – Facets 2018 at Pandit Dindayal Auditorium on 3rd February 2018. In great style the show was a blend of Music, Western Dance and Fashion. The theme of this year’s show was ‘INDIAN CULTURE’.

Shri Sudhir Nanavati, President, GLS University was the Guest of Honour. Mr. Paresh Pahuja : ‘Tiger Zinda Hai’ Actor, model and GLS Alumni graced the occasion. Ms. Riya Subodh : India’s next Model Season 3 winner and GLS Alunmi and Ms. Babita Sharma were the judges of the event.

Mr. Paresh Pahuja, Ms. Riya Subodh and Ujjwal Shah (Student of SEM-II) were felicitated by the college for their extra ordinary achievements.

More than 100 students participated in the show amidst the loud cheering of 1000 plus audience.

• INSTITUTIONAL AND INDUSTRIAL VISIT

The Faculty of Commerce, GLS University organized an institutional and industrial visit to the Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India and Mother Dairy on 31st January 2018. 50 students from the college were the part of this visit. It was a very informative visit as the expert faculties from the Institute and also the director of the Institute interacted with the students about need of entrepreneurship and differences between entrepreneurship and management. Several other topics like government schemes and initiatives about promoting entrepreneurship in India and the need to do so were also discussed. On the same day post lunch students along with the faculty Prof. Vijay Tripathi visited the Mother Dairy plant at Gandhinagar. This visit was significant as the students understood the practical applications of mass production management as well as the decision-making skills and production management skills. The students visited several branches in the dairy which manufactured several products like different varieties of milk, several types of ice cream, the milk powder preparation and also the flavored bottled milk. The students also understood the need of different types of packaging for local and export products.

• COMMEMORATION OF MARTYR’S DAY

GLS University’s Faculty of Commerce celebrated Martyrs’ day on 30th January 2018 by inviting Mrs Lata Parmar from Gandhi Ashram who enlightened the gathering with several lesser known facts and events of Gandhian Era. The lecture was followed by Discussion Forum wherein students discussed and expressed their views on Gandhian Philosophy.

• PARTICIPATION IN NSS MOCK PARLIAMENT

On 28 January, 2018 students of GLS UNIVERSITY participated in “NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME MOCK PARLIAMENT” organized by State NSS Cell, Department of Higher Education, Government of Gujarat and NSS Regional Directorate, Ministry of Youth affairs & Sports, Government of India at KCG, Ahmedabad. The mock parliament was conducted to make the students aware of the work and code of conduct performed in Lok Sabha & Rajya Sabha for passing bills of almost all the fields like Ministry of science and Technology, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Labour & Employment, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Ministry of Education. All the procedures were followed in the mock parliament consisting of Speaker of the House, the ruling party, the opposition party and all the ministries. Hetvi shah student of Faculty of Commerce was the Speaker of the House and Gaurav sharma was the Deputy Speaker of the House. Formal discussions and debate sessions were performed upon the issues of Gujarat State for all the fields. Around 200 NSS volunteers of 25 universities participated in the mock parliament. The mock parliament was conducted under the guidance of NSS Regional director Kamalkumar kar Sir and State NSS officer Dr. R.K. Patel Sir.

•  NSS Volunteers Once again Shine at Sabarmati Festival 2018 – 2nd Edition

Trustee of Sabarmati Festival Edition 2, Mrs. Anar Patel and Mr.Vanrajsingh Chawda along with their organizing team came at GLS Auditorium on 16th January, 2018 to provide brief about the event, and invited NSS VOLUNTEERS to manage the Festival at Sabarmati Riverfront Event Center.The mega event started from 17th January 2018 till 21st January 2018. Around 150 volunteers from F.O.C (SMPIC) participated in the entire 5 days event. Reporting time for all the volunteers was from 4 pm till 10 pm. There were 5 core teams named A,B,C,D,E which included sub teams under the core team. Mainly duties which were assigned to the students were at Back Stage, VVIP Area, Normal area, Art gallery, Green rooms, Monuments, Food Court and so on. Each and every team got a chance to manage all the sections of the Festival. Volunteers were provided with refreshments and Dinner. On account of this the volunteers managed and displayed their great management skills. The organizers appreciated the efforts of the volunteers and showed their gratitude towards greater participation in all the events. This whole event was guided by Dean. Dr.Ashwin Purohit and co-ordinated by Prof. Vijay Tripathi.

• MOTIVATIONAL SEMINAR

Faculty of Commerce has invited Miss. Anita Henestrosa for conducting session on youth motivation on 16/1/2018 at GLS Auditorium. She is on a mission called The Mapit30K mission which is to empower the youth to create their map to success in school and become their own leader in life. Anita’s goal is to inspire 30K students in 30 nations in 330 days. She travelled at so many places in world like Nepal, China, USA, Canada, India and conducted sessions for youth motivation. Anita gives motivational speeches to thousands of students worldwide. Anita works hard to bring a fun, inspiring and memorable experience to your school. Each presentation is always customized to meet the interests of your students and your goals. She is from Switzerland and she gave 3 steps for achieving goal easily…

• PCOS AWARENESS AND EDUCATION PROGRAM

Faculty of Commerce organized ‘PCOS Awareness and Education Program for Girls’ under CWDC in association with The Federation of Obstetric & Gynaecological Societies of India, Mumbai, on 9th January, 2018, Tuesday. This informative session was conducted by Dr. Sheetal Punjabi MBBS, MD – Obstetrics &Gynaecologist and DGO. The topics covered in the program were Lifestyle related issues like PCOS, Obesity etc., Menstrual Disorders, Common Problems faced by Young Girls & how best to cope up with these changes and General Wellbeing – Nutrition, exercises & healthy eating habits etc. The program helped young girls develop positive attitude, feel confident & proud of themselves towards growing up early in life. PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) is a common hormonal problem in young girls. 100 girls were benefitted by the program.

• VOTING AWARENESS DRIVE BY Faculty of Commerce

Ours is a largest and unique democratic system in the world. It has several unique features; divergent fabric of its voters being its most significant aspect. The Voters Awareness drive was organised on 11th December, 2017 from mahalaxmi cross road, paldi to sardar patel stadium cross road, navrangpura by Faculty of Commerce , GLS UNIVERSITY under the National Service Scheme (NSS) to create the awareness about the right to vote among the citizens. The drive was carried out at mahalaxmi cross road, suvidha cross road, panchwati cross road, lal bunglow cross, swastik cross road, sardar patel stadium cross road. Around 150 students actively participated in the campaign. Even the first-time voters were also a part of the drive where through slogan and placard display, they created awareness about the right to vote and also the importance of this right.

RJ Harshil from Radio City joined the drive and participated to encourage the volunteers. Dr. Ashwin Purohit’s,(Dean Faculty of Commerce) presence motivated and inspired volunteers to successfully conduct the drive. The volunteers motivated the citizens to vote and cast their vote righteously. Activities like chanting of slogans, banners depicting voting awareness and placard display were undertaken. The programme was held to appeal to voters of the city to make sure that they cast their vote on 14th December 2017.The slogans like vote karo vat thi, my vote my voice, I will vote! We will vote! , ek do teen char voting ka heh sabko adhikhar, etc were chanted on traffic signals to make them aware of the significance of voting.

• CWDC Seminar On BEING WOMAN – HEALTH, WELLNESS & SELF-DISCOVERY

Faculty of Commerce, under CWDC organised a Seminar ‘Being Woman- Health, Wellness and Self-Discovery’ on 8th & 9th December, 2017 in college campus.

On 8th December,2017, Friday, experts from different fields Dr. Falguni Bavishi, renowned gynaecologist, Ms. Khushnam Avary, Director Panache Academy and RJ Devaki Red FM guided the students towards a vibrant healthy living that would help them to change and evolve into radiant beings. 116 students participated and were benefitted by the seminar.

Dr. Falguni Bhavishi who heads the team of embryologist at Bhavishi Fertility Institute, stressed on the fact ‘Healthy woman means healthy society’. She discussed various aspects of physical, emotional and psychological health of women. She guided the participants to have a better sense of overall well-being and vitality.

Ms. Khushnum Avary an Ex-Airhostess, Instructor and a corporate trainer by profession, focused on grooming oneself into confident and competent individuals. She guided the students regarding different aspects of grooming like dressing, make up body language formal and informal look etc. She rightly said, “First impression is created within 20 seconds and that’s why they say ‘First impression is the last impression.’

RJ Devaki RedFM fame, talked about woman empowerment. She talked about the various blockages faced by girls in the society and how they would overcome it by being responsibly bold. She gave a lovely slogan to girls, “I am more than what I am.”

On 9th December, 2017, Saturday, Ms. Shikha Verma conducted an interesting fitness session from 8.00 am to 9.30 am in GLS lawns.

• VIRTUAL REALITY WORKSHOP

Faculty of Commerce organized a ‘Virtual reality workshop on 6th December 2017 in order to provide valuable knowledge inputs on Essentials of technology up gradation, Online shopping and Excellence in Marketing. It was a knowledge gaining session for the students who aim to pursue digital marketing and retail management career as their future. The workshop was conducted by Mr.Avik Gajjar, software testing project manager at lodestone software services Pvt.Ltd. He shared detailed explanation regarding Virtual reality and augmented reality with reference to opportunities ahead in commerce sector.100 students participated in the workshop. It was coordinated by Dr. Krupa Bhatt.

• CELEBRATION OF GITA JAYANTI

Faculty of Commerce organised a lecture on Bhagavad Gita on 29th November in the campus. The Bhagavad Gita is considered the most important and influential Hindu scripture for its philosophical, practical, political, psychological and spiritual value. Bhagavad Gita Jayanti, or simply Gita Jayanti, marks the birth of this holy book. According to the traditional Hindu calendar, Gita Jayanti falls on the Ekadashi day of Shukla Paksha or the bright half of the Margashirsha month (November-December). Bhagavad Gita is for all people all places and all age groups.For our youth it gives vibrant calls which inspires youth to act righteously under all conditions and situations. It calls us to Arise,Stand up,and Fight the battle of life.This puts life in a person specially the Youth as it underscores that there is nothing which cannot be done.Next lesson for youth is that God resides equally in all as our Atma or soul which constitutes our original nature.This shall make them look at every one with a sense of Equality, Oneness and Unity to get rid of the feeling of superiority or sense of Ego.More than 100 students attended the lecture.

• NEW VOTER ID CARD DRIVE BY NSS VOLUNTEERS

NSS Volunteers of Faculty of Commerce conducted a “NEW VOTER ID CAMPAIGN” in the college campus under the guidance of Dean, Dr. Ashwin Purohit and NSS Programme Co-ordinator, Prof. Vijay Tripathi. The campaign was conducted from 9th November, 2017 to 11th November, 2017 and the timing for the same was 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Around 500 students from 8 different colleges of GLS UNIVERSITY were benefitted by the campaign by enrolling their names as New Voter. The primary motive for conducting this campaign was to become a medium between common people and election commission for application of all new voter id card by the new voters effectively and efficiently. The other purpose of this drive was to aware people for their voting rights for the coming election. It was totally students operated drive where NSS VOLUNTEERS guided all the applicants for filling up the forms, various documents required for application and all the other queries regarding form filling. At the end it was successful drive as all the forms were duly filled up and submitted at the collector office.

• NSS DAY CELEBRATION

NSS department of Faculty of Commerce celebrated NSS Day on 25th September 2017. A half day programme was organized on the same day. Early in the morning a program was organised in association with healthy campus wherein the volunteers cleaned the campus and sensitized people on keeping the institution clean and green.Shri. Hari Om Gandhi, Narcotics Control Bureau Zonal Director addressed the gathering and appreciated the work of NSS volunteers. Officials of the Ahmedabad zonal unit of the NCB and members of the ‘Healthy Campus motivated and encouraged the students to undertake activities to promote healthy living on campus.The Programme was organized by NSS unit of the college under the guidance of Prof. Vijay Tripathi, NSS Programme Officer.

• WORKSHOP ON GENDER SENSITIZATION UNDER CWDC

Faculty of Commerce – SMPIC, under CWDC organised a ‘Gender Sensitization Workshop’ in collaboration with Sauhard, an NGO on 9thSeptember, 2017, Saturday. The workshop aimed at not only bringing awareness regarding gender equality and diversity but also to create a space where students can talk, question and discuss issues related to gender. The workshop included youth parliament, debate and role-play followed by discussion with students. 40 students were benefited by the workshop.

• GLS UNIVERSITY’S NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME MEET

The NSS Programme Officers and volunteers meeting of the NSS of Gujarat Law University was held on 8th September 2017. NSS volunteers and Programme Officers from various colleges attended the meeting.The programme was convened by Dr.Ashwin Purohit, Dean, Faculty of Commerce, GLS University.Program started with welcome speech by NSS Program Coordinator Prof. Vijay Tripathi, wherein he talked about history, aim, objectives and motto of NSS. Chief Guest of the function Shri Kamalkumarkar, NSS Regional Director, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports addressed the gathering to explain role and responsibilities of NSS volunteers. Dr.Dharmesh shah registrar and member secretary, GLS UNIVERSITY graced the occasion and motivated students to take part in NSS activities. Dr.Bhalchandra Joshi, Provost, GLS UNIVERSITY blessed the occasion and shared his life learning experiences of NSS camps. Shri.Vadibhai Patel, Dean, Student Welfare instructed the officers to take special attention in organizing NSS activities. The Programme Officers interacted with the NSS coordinator regarding action plan of NSS Department.

• RALLY FOR RIVER

NSS Unit of Faculty of Commerce participated in Rally For Rivers Campaign organized under the leadership of Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev to save rivers and save water for future generation. NSS unit of the college participated in the rally on 1st September, 2017. The purpose of rally was to create awareness of the public for this event. Student volunteers distributed pamphlets amongst public to save rivers. The campaign was a great success in promoting the need to save and create water resources,for the maintenance of ecological balance in order to safe guard the future life. The signing campaign was held in college to support the cause.

• BLOOD DONATION CAMP

On 29th August, 2017 from 8am to12pm, Faculty of Commerce organised BLOOD DONATION CAMP in association with INDIAN RED CROSS SOCIETY. Faculty members, students and administrative staff of college donated blood. 90 units of blood were contributed. The basic objective of this camp was to provide a platform to celebrate and thank individuals who donate blood voluntarily, for altruistic reasons and without any monetary reward and to remove all the wrong debunk myths regarding blood donation.

• FOLK DANCE WORKSHOP

Faculty of Commerce organised Folk Dance work shop from 28th August to 31st August,2017 .Total 30 students participated in the workshop. The workshop was conducted by Kuldeep Shukla ,an alumni of SMPIC. The workshop included introduction to authentic Folk Dance of Gujarat and traditional folk steps of Garba, Raas, Rajasthani and Sheri Garba. On the last day of the workshop, the audition for state level Folk competition was held. The new batch of the College participated with lot of enthusiasm and zeal with senior folk dancers through out the workshop. The folk dance workshop was coordinated by Prof Kruti Paritosh Shah.

• THEATRE WORKSHOP 2017

Faculty of Commerce successfully organized “ABHIVYAKTI: A FINISHING WORKSHOP IN THEATRE”, for the 8th consecutive year. The workshop was conducted from 11th August, 2016 to 13th August, 2017 by renowned casting director, writer and director Mr. ABHISHEK SHAH. The workshop dealt with basics of theatre, music, dance, creative writing and stagecraft. Various aspects of drama, including acting, voice modulation, breathing control and reflex enhancing were taught. Around 50 Students from Faculty of Commerce were benefited from the workshop. The workshop took off with a sharing of the participants’ theatre related experiences in the past. Participants were briefly oriented about the evolution and history of theatre. The session helped provoke a rethink on the need of the kind of theatre and its scope among the youth. The sessions were enlivened by various theatre exercises and games which allowed inhibitions to drop even as it built in a discipline among the participants and demonstrate the same in their interaction with others. The workshop was followed by a visit to H. K. Auditorium for experience of stage, back stage, lights etc. The workshop was a huge success.

• FACULTY OF COMMERCE DANCE AND GROOMING WORKSHOP 2017

FACULTY OF COMMERCE Dance and Grooming 9 day Workshop commenced from 4th August 2017. Workshop was a combination of stage presence and confidence building tips required for ramp walk plus a parody of Bollywood dance. This workshop provided platform to around 80 students to learn and highlight their talents.

• RAKHI CELEBRATION WITH A DIFFERENCE

It’s a proud moment for GLS UNIVERSITY, FACULTY OF COMMERCE (S.M.P.I.C.) that on 4 August,2017all the faculty members and the students contributed handmade rakhis, greeting cards, etc for the Indian Army Soldiers under the initiative “EK RAKHI FAUJI KE NAAM” by the famous radio station “94.3 MYFM”. Around 300 students of our college participated in this initiative. The students prepared an Army coloured box in which all the rakhis, greeting cards, etc were collected and was submitted to RJ ARCHANA JANI who lead this whole initiative. She went to JAMMU & KASHMIR (AKNOOR) where she personally interacted with the Indian Army Soldiers, tied lots of rakhis to them , gave greeting cards and had a cherish able moment with them. The basic idea behind this initiative was to express that no one here in this country forgets our Indian Soldiers on all the festive occasions as the soldiers don’t get leave on the festive days and we are always with them as they safeguard us 24×7 by sacrificing all the things in all the manner they can.

• GURUPURNIMA CELEBRATION

Celebrated to acknowledge the selfless induction of wisdom and knowledge by teachers, Students of Faculty of Commerce marked ‘Guru-Purnima’ in a unique and traditional manner. Amidst a fashionable trend to criticise today’s youth for their blind chase towards the western culture, there are a few young people who are still very much attached to the great Indian culture and tradition. This year too, following the tradition of the college, the students celebrated ‘Guru Purnima’ on 8th July, 2017 in a way well suitable to the Indian culture. On the occasion of ‘Guru Purnima, the students worshipped and paid respect to the professors in a traditional way. They welcomed the teachers by showering flowers, worshipped them with a lotus and a small pooja as a token of their love and gratitude. The celebration also included a cake cutting ceremony. The students expressed their sense of gratitude towards the teachers and sought their blessings. Dr. Ashwin Purohit, Dean, Faculty of Commerce blessed the student, appreciated their love and efforts to make the day special. He even conveyed, “the true ‘Guru Dakshina’ shall be fulfilled when you (students) shall excel in your studies and have successful careers.”

Indeed in the time when the youth is engrossed with social media and getting aloof of the society, this gesture by the students of FACULTY OF COMMERCE is really commendable.

• ORIENTATION FUNCTION FOR THE NEW ENTRANTS OF FACULTY OF COMMERCE

On 4th and 5th of July, 2017, the institute organised Orientation programme for the students of semester-1 joining B.Com (Honours) in Faculty of Commerce from the academic year 2017-2018. Students and their parents were invited for the function that was aimed at imparting important information regarding the importance of B.Com. Honours programme, the syllabus, examination pattern etc. as well as making them aware about the glorious past and present of the institute. The students were shown audio visual presentations about the previous year’s activities and achievements of the institute and the Staff Introduction. The Vice-Principal, Dr.Marzun Jokhi made a power point presentation to explain about the syllabus, the structure of B.Com. Honours programme, examination pattern etc. He also explained about the institute’s international collaborations like CIMA, UK and Concordia college, New York. The Dean, faculty of Commerce, Dr. Ashwin Purohit welcomed the new students as well as their parents to the institute and motivated the students to take advantage of various activities held at the institute. He explained the importance of classroom. “You can learn about academic topics anywhere else but the more important are the lessons of life which you will only learn in classrooms”, he added. He also mentioned about the charity activities carried out by the institute and put emphasis on the mission to prepare good citizens along with professional excellence, through value based education. At the end, the Dean solved the queries of students as well as their parents to end the function.
