• ‘PHENOMENAL WOMEN-A TRIBUTE TO WOMANHOOD’
Faculty of Commerce (B.Com. Hons.) under CWDC celebrated International Women’s Day by organizing a seminar ‘Phenomenal Women- A Tribute to Womanhood’ on 8th March, 2019, Friday, in H. H. Auditorium. Ms. Vaibhavi Nanavati, Advocate, High Court of Gujarat & Member, The Governing Body, GLS University was the Chairperson of the seminar. The seminar was conceived and conceptualized by Dean Dr. Ashwin Purohit.
In the seminar, we were fortunate to have the presence of influential women stalwarts like Dr. Nayana Patel, IVF & Surrogacy Expert, Ms. Manisha Lavkumar, Senior Advocate & Government Pleader, High Court of Gujarat and Ms. Neha Godiawala Shah, a Health & Fitness expert. We felicitated and honoured the power and struggle of these phenomenal women who have broken all the barriers and reached the pinnacle of success. Further, they shared their experiences, their journey towards name and fame and inspired our students to realize the unlimited potential that they have.
Dean Dr. Ashwin Purohit in his welcome speech highlighted the importance of International Women’s day and also explained the motivational significance the function holds over the students of the institute. Ms. Neha Godiawala Shah spoke about her struggle of how she overcame Arthritis and started exercising again and achieved success in her life. She said “Braving all the odds that life threw at me, I took them as challenges and converted them into opportunities.” She told everyone on how to remain positive and never look back. She is still suffering from arthritis, but even if it pains, she doesn’t stop herself from conducting classes and training people.
Ms. Manisha Luvkumar rightly told the students, “There is no age to start learning. There are nolack of resources and your background doesn’t matter to fulfil your dreams.” She said Destiny has its own time, and it comes at the right time to the right person. She also said that there are no competitions, and it is just you who matter. Even though she is at such a great platform, but she devotes equal time to her family as well as her profession.
Dr. Nayana Patel talked about empowering surrogates and the parents of surrogates. She was the person to bring Anand to the world Map. Her first case of surrogacy was Asia’s first and Worlds fifth case of surrogate grandmother. She was described as “One woman helping another woman, We Love It.” She told everyone to not be afraid of it, and instead take it to you so as reach further heights. She told everyone to focus on 3E’s- Education, Ethics and Entertainment and throw away the E of EGO.
Dr. B. H. Joshi, Provost, GLS University appreciated Faculty of Commerce for inviting such stupendous females from various fields whose journey enthused the students to keep up the chin even in adverse circumstances and give their 200% to everything they pursue and strive for the best in life. He beautifully appreciated the woman power by quoting Tagore. The chairperson of the function Ms. Vaibhavi Nanavati very nicely summed up the spirit of the occasion by appreciating the success of all the three Phenomenal women and acknowledging the positive and persistent hard work put by them for years together. She guided the students that to be successful and happy in life one needs to be simple, righteous and humble.
• CWDC GROOMING SEMINAR
Faculty of Commerce B.Com.(Hons.), under CWDC, conducted a Grooming Session for Girls with SEWA Federation’s SEWA Salon Easy’s colour project (Pankh) & Godrej on 18th February,2019. The students were informed about the nuances of hair colouring andwere given other beauty tips. The students and faculty members were also offered free hair colour and other beauty services from their beauty therapists. Many students availed of the services provided bythe beauticians. The session was co-ordinated by Dr.Giatnjali Rampal and Prof. Rajul Goenka.
• FACETS 2019
Faculty of Commerce B.Com (Hons.) celebrated its Annual Culfest – Facets 2019 at Tagore hall on 9th February 2019. In great style the show was a blend of Music, Folk, Mime, Western Dance and Fashion. The theme of this year’s show was ‘Red and Black’. Shri Sudhir Nanavati, President,GLS University was the Guest of Honour. Miss Jimmy Nanda and Dipti Sharma were the judges of the event.COO of GLS University Ms.Chandani Kapadia, encouraged students and distributed prizes to the winners. More than 120 students participated in the show amidst the loud cheering of 800 plus audience.

• FACULTY OF COMMERCE BEARS THE TORCH FOR A STEP TOWARDS TRAFFIC AWARENESS
Complying with GLS University’s philosophy of value based quality education, Faculty of Commerce has taken up a mission to prepare responsible citizens along with highly skilled professionals. It was a proud occasion for the entire GLS University when Faculty of Commerce B.Com (Hons.) became the host for the inauguration of the Traffic Awareness Week in collaboration with the RTO Department, Ahmedabad and Ahmedabad City Traffic Police.
On 4th February, 2019, Monday, in a swanky function, with more than 2500 people in audience consisting of students, police personnel, NGOs, various Associations and so on, the week long project to spread awareness about the traffic rules and safety measures was inaugurated. The dais was rich with luminary dignitaries like Shri A. K. Singh (IPS), Ahmedabad City Police Commissioner, Dr. Sumant Shah Chairman, Heart Foundation and Research Institute, Dr. B.H.Joshi, Provost, GLS University, Dr. Dharmesh Shah, Registrar, GLS University, Dr. Ashwin Purohit, Dean, Faculty of Commerce, GLS University, Shri S.P.Muniya (GAS) Regional Traffic Officer and Shri J.R. Mothaliya (IPS) Joint Police Commissioner (Traffic).Dr. Sudhir Nanavati, President, GLS University, graced the function as the Chief Guest.
All the dignitaries who shared their views put emphasis on the importance of following traffic rules. According to the common concern shared by all, the basic problem is the ignorance of traffic rules as well as the tendency of avoiding to follow the traffic rules. Dr. A.K. Singh (IPS), Ahmedabad City Police Commissioner, expressed his great concern about the attitude and ignorance of today’s youth towards traffic rules. He also emphasized on the role of the parents as well as the educational institutes in spreading awareness in this direction. Dr. Singh congratulated and appreciated Dr. Sudhir Nanavati for shouldering the responsibility and providing the launch pad to execute the mission of the Traffic Awareness Week. Other dignitaries Shri S.P. Muniya(IAS), Regional Traffic Officer and Shri J.R. Mothaliya(IPS), Joint Police Commissioner(Traffic) also backed the views of Shri A.K. Singh and put pressure on the importance of self awareness and self discipline in following traffic rules rather than the actions by the authority.
Dr. Sudhirbhai Nanavati shared motivational words during his speech. He congratulated the traffic department for the initiative and also insisted on proper execution and implementation of the rules and laws related to traffic. As the President of GLS University he informed the gathering about the strict adherence to the traffic rules exercised at GLS University and promised for zero tolerance for Traffic Rules offences. Dr. Nanavati also took up the challenge to carry out more traffic awareness programmes to benefit the students in future.
The program was coordinated by Dean Dr. Ashwin Purohit. He also proposed the vote of thanks. The other highlight of the function was the live demonstration about the Helmet by the retailers to explain the importance of using good quality helmet while driving two wheelers. It was a short and compact function with a huge and substantial significance.
• TRAFFIC AWARENESS TRAINING SEMINAR
Faculty of Commerce (B.Com. Hons.), GLS University in association with Ahmedabad city traffic police had organised the 1st Phase of Traffic Awareness Drive on 21st January in GLS Auditorium. Mr. Deepak Vyas, ACP, Traffic and Mr. Kapil Nakum, Police Inspector, Traffic Department were invited for the same and trained the students regarding the traffic rules. PI Kapil Nakum sensitised the students concerning accidents taking place in day to day life. It was a very interactive session wherein students and faculty members shared their own experience. He was there to make a team which could spread awareness about traffic rules in the whole of Ahmedabad city. He also quoted that “The road on which you love driving can become your death bed if you do not follow traffic rules.”It was a very encouraging session escalating the need of following the traffic rules.
• WORKSHOP ON JOB HUNTING-GETTING READY TO FACE THE PROSPECTIVE EMPLOYER
Under the auspice of ‘Kshitij’ – Career Carving Cell, Faculty of Commerce (B.Com Hons.) organized a two- day workshop on “Job Hunting- Getting ready to face the prospective employer” for the final year graduate and post-graduate students on 24th and 25th January, 2019, with an idea to make them industry-ready before they face the corporate world.
On the first day, Ms. Anuradha Pandit, an Assistant Professor, who guided the students how to create their mark by preparing consolidated and impressive Curriculum Vitae, conducted the session. Next resource person was Ms. Dhvani Pandya, an Assistant Professor and a soft skills trainer who trained the students on Developing Interview Skills and discussed various techniques of facing the interview effectively.
Next day, the session was taken by Ms. Vama Rajpal, an Image Consultant on ‘How to build a Professional Image’. She highlighted the importance of Non-verbal communication, Etiquettes; Mr. Saleel Bhatt, an industry expert and a corporate trainer, conducted Power dressing etc. on the day of the Interview and the second session of the day. He shared his expertise on Group Discussion Dynamics and the nuances of the workings of corporate world.
The resource persons tried to cover all the arenas of facing a prospective employer and 80 students were benefitted from the workshop. Prof. Aashal Bhatt coordinated the workshop.
• INSTITUTIONAL AND INDUSTRIAL VISIT
Faculty of Commerce, GLS University organized an educational and industrial visit to the Amul Dairy, Amul chocolate factory, Institute of Rural Management Anand (IRMA) and BJVM college Vallabh Vidyanagar, Anand, Gujarat on 7th January, 2019 for Post Graduate(M.Com) students of GLS University. Dean Dr. Ashwin Purohit always believes that education must not be restricted to the four walls of class room and practical exposure should be given to the students to widen their horizons of thinking. 53 students were part of this visit along with Dean Dr.AshwinPurohit and the faculty Co-ordinators Dr.Bimal Solanki and Dr. Bhumika Ansodaria. The students were taken to BJVM V.V. Nagar wherein they were briefed the history of the college and were taken to Library and campus visit of the campus. The interaction session was organised by Host Institute between the students of both the institutes and it was a very fruitful session as they learned a lot by discussion on various academic topics. The next destination was Amul Dairy, Anand wherein students understood the practical conduct of mass production and management skills at a Dairy plant. Students here learned about the preparation and packaging of several products such as Butter and the Milk Powder.
On the same day post lunch students visited IRMA Institute. It was an informative and interactive experience as Faculty of IRMA briefed students about their courses, syllabi and innovative teaching pedagogy that distinguishes IRMA from other educational institutes. It was a very informative visit as the expert faculty from their institute interacted with students and briefed how IRMA is different from other Educational Institutes. Students were taken on the campus and library visit.
Students also had an amazing experience visiting Amul chocolate factory which was recently inaugurated by Hon. Prime Minister Shri .Narendra Modi. Students here saw a high-tech fully automated chocolate production Plant. They could practically understand how the manufacturing of different varieties of chocolates ranging from dark, sweet and bitter from local and imported coco beans take place. The visit was a great learning experience for the students about the working of Dairy Industry.
• ARTHASHASTROTSAV 2019
Arthshastra means Economics, a study to deal with scarcity and optimize resources allocation and Utsav means Festival. To commemorate the Economics Festival, Faculty of Commerce, B.Com(Hons), GLS University has organised two day Economics Fest- Arthashastrotsav – a festival to celebrate the intricacies of economics in a practical and interesting way on 4th and 5th January 2019. There were total 150+ Participants from more than 10 colleges from Ahmedabad. The first day of the fest ended on a great note wherein the following two events were conducted:
“ADHIKOSH NEETI” (Central Bank Protocol) consisted of total 11 teams out of which 8 teams were selected for the final round by clearing the first round which was an online case study analysis.
“TARK VITARK” (Debate competition)- In this event the participants went through the quiz round i.e elimination round and the second round was the debate wherein 7 teams were selected for the same out of 14 teams.
On second day of the fest, the first event was “NIDHI ANVESHNAM” (TREASURE HUNT) started at 8.30am. In this event the participants has gone through the quiz type of round of 6 images, which was the elimination round and the 2nd round was of treasure hunt. The participants have to find the different spots through clues in this round. And at last the participants need to find out the questions of the answers which they have found out. The 2nd event was “ARTHSHASTRA AAKHET” (economics games) started at 10.30 am. In the 1st round of this event the participants have played musical chair which was the elimination round and in the 2nd round the participants have made different models according to the sectors given to them . In the 2nd round the participants have competed against each other for the commodities which were in scarcity. The event was coordinated by Prof. Anjali Trivedi.
• CELEBRATION OF DAYS & CHARITY WEEK
• WOMEN WRITERS’ FESTIVAL
Faculty of Commerce (B.Com Hons.) students participated in Women Writers’ Festival organized at IIM Ahmedabad on 19th December 2018. Putting the spotlight on women writers ,the festival encompassed both fiction and non fiction writing. From women in the workplace, to women behind the scenes in Bollywood, to women in Indian history, to non fiction narratives by women everything was covered and discussions were held in panels as well as workshops were also held for aspiring writers. 64 students of Faculty of Commerce (B.Com Hons.) had the opportunity to witness writing as a passion for women and their perspective on literature, art and politics. The faculty in-charge was Dr.Krupa Bhatt.
• S/heFest #celebratingwomanhood
Faculty of Commerce, under the Collegiate Woman Development Committee (CWDC) organized a three day festival S/heFest #celebratingwomanhood, with a purpose to practically achieve the mission of imparting maximum awareness on ‘Gender Sensitization, Equality & Safety’ from 17th December, 2018 to 19th December, 2018.
On 17th and 18th December, 2018, various competitions like Rangoli, Poster Making, Mono Acting, Bookmark Making and Poetry Completion encompassing the theme of STAND TOGETHER- A stand for Gender Equality, Gender Sensitivity and Gender Safety were conducted wherein 125 students participated from 15 different colleges of Gujarat Law Society.
On 19th December, 2018, a Symposium was organized in H. H. Auditorium, GLS Campus wherein Dr.Mrugesh Vaishnav, renowned Psychiatrist, Dr. Darshana Thakkar, known Gynaecologist& Motivational Speaker, &Dr. Mayuri Pandya, Director, GLS Law College enthralled the audience with their expertise and interacted with the students. Dr.Mrugesh Vaishnav wittily conducted the session wherein he guided the young girls about the relationship problems and mishaps they face. Dr. Darshana Thakkar very strongly conveyed “If you see a girl on road at midnight, she is your responsibility and not an opportunity”. She emphasized on gender sensitivity and a balanced society. Dr. Mayuri Pandya talked about “Breaking the Silence.” She discussed many cases wherein path breaking judgments were taken when the practices followed were questioned by females.The Symposium was followed by performance of a skit ‘Her Body, Her Right’ by Faculty of Commerce students which depicted the journey of a woman from early age to urban era.
The day concluded with the valedictory function wherein the winners of various competitions and events which took place on 17th& 18th December, 2018 were felicitated by certificates and cash prizes by the President of the function, Dr. B. H. Joshi ( Provost, GLS University) and the Chief Guest of the function, Shri Vadibhai Patel (Dean, Student Welfare Committee, GLS University). The festival was coordinated by Prof. Rajul Goenka and Dr. Gitanjali Rampal.
• WORLD AIDS DAY AWARENESS PROGRAMME
Faculty of Commerce, GLS University, organised an awareness programme on 1st December, 2018, WORLD AIDS DAY. The purpose of the programme was to sensitize the students about the stigma of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV virus. The event was graced by the presence of Dr Ambrish Tripathi, District Chairperson of Lions Club International, Dr Amrut Solanki, Civil Hospital and RJ Dhwanit, Radio Mirchi Fame. The doctors oriented the students regarding the physiological and psychological aspects of HIV and AIDS.RJ Dhwanit gave a very motivating speech which left the audience motivated to spread awareness and break the orthodox mentality associated with the disease. Around 20 HIV infected patients had accompanied Dr Ambrish Tripathi who shared their experiences and sensitized the students. As a token of love, the college gifted a kit comprising of blanket and daily use groceries to all the patients which was appreciated by them.
• FINE ARTS COMPETITION 2018
We at Faculty of Commerce organised various competitions of fine-arts on 7th and 8th September, 2018. Around 35 students participated enthusiastically in various events of Poster making, On the Spot Painting, Cartooning, T-shirt Painting, Rangoli, Face Painting, Tattooing and Photography. Topics like Cleanliness Drive, Global warming, Landscape, Patriotism, Elections, Celebrations etc. were given on the spot.
• BLOOD DONATION CAMP
Faculty of Commerce, GLS University in association with Red Cross Society organised a Blood Donation Camp on 28th August, 2018 in the College Campus. Many youngsters actively participated in the same and happily donated blood for the cause and 70 Units of Blood were received. The camp was successful and not only the students, but also the faculty members and office staff actively participated in the same.
• PLANTATION AND HEALTH CHECK-UP DRIVE
Faculty of Commerce, GLS University in association with Times of India and KD hospital conducted a Tree Plantation Drive and health check-up camp on 27th August, 2018 in the college Campus. More than 100 students participated in the same. The students were told about the importance of our Mother Nature and were taught of measures of protecting the earth by planting as much trees as possible. The drive was a huge success in sensitising students towards sustenance and preservation.
• VISIT TO GANDHI ASHRAM
Forum for Gandhian Philosopy of Faculty of Commerce organized a visit to Gandhi Ashram on 8th August ,2018 to spread the Gandhian philosophy and teachings and to inculcate Gandhian values among college. 150 students along with Faculty coordinator and Vice Principal participated in the visit to ashram. Dr Bhalchandra Joshi Provost, GLS University and Shri Vadibhai Patel, Dean Student welfare, GLS University addressed students and inspired them to imbibe Gandhian practices to make life better. Students visited Museum, Magan Niwas,Upasana Mandir,Hriday Kunj, Vinoba-Mira Kutir – Nandini Udyog Mandir, Painting Gallery etc. It was a wonderful experience to know more about the Father of the Nation at Sabarmati Ashram.
• GURUPURNIMA CELEBRATION 2018
Faculty of Commerce, GLS University every year celebrates GURU PURNIMA, which is completely organized by the students and is kept a surprise for the faculties. This year too, the students of the college, on 27th July 2018 celebrated GURU PURNIMA along with all the members of the college, i.e the teachers and the staff members as well. The students had organized various games for the faculty members and honored every faculty member with a memento and decorated the staff room with pictures of them which they had never seen so as to surprise them. And yet again, like every time, this year’s celebrations ended on a successful note.
• THEATRE WORKSHOP 2018
Faculty of Commerce successfully organized “ABHIVYAKTI: A FINISHING WORKSHOP INTHEATRE”, for the 9th consecutive year from 24th to 30thJuly, 2018, wherein they were trained by the various experts of the theatre field. The workshop was conducted by Shri Dhrunad Kamble, a professionally trained actor, director and writer and co-ordinated by Dr. Sneha Master and Dr. Gitanjali Rampal. The workshop dealt with basics of theatre, music, dance, creative writing and stagecraft. Various aspects of drama, including acting, voice modulation, breathing control and reflex enhancing were taught. Around 50 Students from Faculty of Commerce were benefited from the workshop. DhrunadKamle explained the explorations of working with a group in theatre, understanding of your part-character, how to construct scenes in theatre. He explained working in the group, sharpening the instincts, going with your impulses with the exercises of improvisations. Abhishek Shah, renowned RJ and casting director of many Gujarati films, briefly oriented about the evolution and history of theatre. The session helped provoke a rethink on the need of the kind of theatre and its scope among the youth. Next day, our celebrity guest Jayesh More, 102 Not Out and Wrong Side Raju fame actor discussed how theatre helps us to build our confidence. He also mentioned that studies are very important when you are exploring theatre and films as it provides you with knowledge of all subjects and passion to learn new things. He also told students that theatre and films are different mediums technically, so you have to train your mind, body and voice intensively because those are the tools of actors and he/she has to prepare him/her self for both the mediums.
93.5 FM Radio Jockey, ‘Bako’ fame, Shri Maulik Jagdish Nayak, talked about his journey as a theatre artist, a film actor and now a popular RJ and how theatre helped him in being successful. He talked about his interest in music and acting, and how he has been working as an actor, singer and musician since his early youth. He also told the students about the time he entered into theatre field, and was able to overcome his problem of Ego. He said that “If you start with theatre, you should observe it from the backstage so that you get to learn things”. At last, he talked about how it is important to practice and exercise in front of a Mirror to gain Maximum Confidence.
On the last day, the students of the Theatre Workshop visited HK Auditorium, where they were informed about the theatre architecture and understanding the different aspects of theatre production. Further, Shri Subhash Brahmbhatt, principal, H.K. Arts College said, “Observation is the best art to learn Acting”, that is observation and acting are two sides of a coin and go hand in hand. One has to be very dedicated while preparing for any role to achieve great success. Also, to get into acting and theatre well, one has to dig deep into any role, overcome all the fear in life and come out of the comfort zone to accomplish any task.
• FOLK DANCE WORKSHOP 2018
Faculty of Commerce organised a workshop for Folk Dance and Garba from 18th July, 2018 to 21st July, 2018. Total 55 students participated in the workshop. The workshop was conducted by Kuldeep Shukla, an alumni of Faculty of Commerce. It included introduction to authentic Folk Dance of Gujarat and traditional Folk Dance steps of Garba, Raas, Rajasthani and Sheri Garba. On the last day of the workshop, the audition for state level Folk dance competition was held. The new batch of the institute participated with a lot of enthusiasm and zeal with senior folk dancers throughout the workshop. The folk dance workshop was co-ordinated by Dr.Kruti Paritosh Shah.
• PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP 2018-19
Five-day Photography workshop was organised on 16th July,2018 at Faculty of Commerce B.Com (Hons.) Around 35 students had been benefitted. Renowned faculty Mr.Haard Dave had conducted this workshop. Various aspects of photography like Golden rule, framing, object balancing, showcasing a story in photography etc. were covered. The students were given topics for photography to give the practical experience. Apart from giving knowledge about various cameras and lenses, clicking photos from smart phone and various apps available were discussed. The workshop was coordinated by Prof. Rajul Goenka.
• DANCE AND GROOMING WORKSHOP 2018
Dance and Grooming 10 day Workshop commenced from 9th July2018. Workshop was a combination of stage presence and confidence building tips required for ramp walk plus a parody of Bollywood dance. This workshop provided platform to around 120 students to learn and highlight their talents. The workshop was conducted by Mr. Chakshu Chauhan and Mr. Nidhip Shah, wherein different sessions of personality grooming and stage presence along with dance were taught.
• ORIENTATION PROGRAMME 2018-19
On the 3rd, 4th and 5th of July, 2018, Faculty of Commerce (SMPIC) of GLS University organized Orientation Programme for the students of Semester-1 joining B.Com (Honours) for the academic year 2018-19. Students and their parents were invited for the function that was aimed at imparting important information regarding the importance of B.com (Honours) programme, the syllabus, the examination pattern etc. as well as making them aware about the glorious past and present of the institute. The students witnessed an audio visual presentation about the previous year’s activities and achievements of the institute and the Staff Introduction. The Vice-Principal, Dr.Marzun Jokhi made a presentation to explain the syllabus, the structure of the course, examination pattern etc. to the students and briefed them with the details. He also explained about the institute’s international collaborations like CIMA, UK, Concordia College, New York and so on. The Dean, Dr. Ashwin Purohit welcomed the new students as well as their parents to the institute and motivated the students to take advantage of various activities held at the institute. Explaining the importance of classroom he added, “You can learn about academic topics anywhere else but more important are the lessons of life which you will only learn in Classrooms”. He also mentioned about the NSS and SocialActivities carried out by the students of the institute and put emphasis on the mission to prepare good citizens along with professional excellence, through value based education. Dr. Purohit also explained the importance of preplanning in life and advised the students to set “Short term”, “Medium term” and “Long term” goals of life. At the end, he solved the queries of the students as well as their parents by conducting a question-answer session to end the function.
