A SESSION ON ‘DEVELOPING READING SKILLS FOR EFFECTIVE
COMMUNICATION’

Date: 13th September,2022

Faculty of Commerce organized an expert session on the topic ‘Developing Reading Skills for Effective Communication’ by Dr. Shubha Nigam. Dr. Shubha Nigam began her session on an interesting note wherein she told students that if you sit on a kitli probably you will be able to meet 100 people and know them, but when you read a book, you meet thousands of people and know about them. On a lighter note, she also told the students that your generation is into making reels and short videos for various social media platforms, you can create interesting characters and tell beautiful stories, if you read books. She very rightly said that to be successful means being a good observer and managing people and situations in appropriate manner. Reading helps you to achieve both in a wonderful manner. She exemplified this with the example of the character of Jeffry Archer’s novel. She further said that business experiences are chaotic and messy. Every business leader needs to be self-aware to navigate complex human issues. Most of the corporate honchos believe that reading guides you into the innermost thoughts of individuals and their struggle. Reading teaches you ‘Chintan’, ‘Manan’ and Manthan’. Here she quoted Mike Henry, sr. VP (operations) at Saga net, who once said that he read in a book, ‘We tend to Judge ourselves by our intentions and we judge others by their results”. This quote he remembered forever. Further she said that business schools teach strategies to succeed but reading teaches ability to neutralize views and to empathize. She ended her session with a wonderful message to the students that, if you want to sharpen some of the most important Business skills, such as the ability to analyze complex human relationships and gain insight into the motivation of others, then the best way to do it is to read books. After the expert session of Dr. Shubha Nigam, the winners of Readathon 2021 Pratham Maheshwari, Padmanabh Chavda and Bhoomi Thakkar shared their experiences of participating in Readathon 2021. The session was coordinated by Dr. Gitanjali Rampal.

SESSION ON DEMYSTIFYING PUBLIC SPEAKING

Date: 14th February,2022

Our institute organized a session on ‘Demystifying Public Speaking’ by an eminent speaker Dr. Nitin Pillai, Language and Communication Expert.  Communication is the back bone where public speaking is the most decoded form of communication. We need to eliminate the public speaking anxiety. John Powell has rightly said that “Communication works for those who work for it”.  Great speakers are not born they are trained. Public speaking is not rocket science. What is it at the core? – one doesn’t get it from books. It happens naturally. By giving practical examples of a barber, Uber driver and vegetable vendor, the speaker in a very humorous way involved the students in a bit typical topic of public speaking. The speaker rightly pointed out that Public Speaking happens at unknown places. It happens in open doors. Public speaking is a Fire Speech. We generally believe Politicians, CEOs, Actors, Orators are great public speakers whereas according to the speaker, Security guards, Uber drivers, Barbers are also good public speakers. Story telling is the core of Public Speaking.  The key ingredients of public speaking are Courage, Confidence, Progress, and the Audience. He talked about the secrets related to building stage courage and right attitude to deliver a speech in an effective manner. At the end Dr. Nitin Pillai answered a few questions from students and cleared their doubts related to the topic. This session was coordinated by Dr. Keyur Vohra.

Dhoni have reaped huge benefits by investing in startups like Dream 11 and Nyka. India after 2005 has become the world’s biggest software hub. Some Unicorns in India have brought a sea change where companies like Byjus who brought revolutionary changes in Education sector, OYO – buying B Class and C Class Hotel, Zomato – grown big because of the eating habits of the people. He further, bifurcated the Richest sector which are technology driven – Health care sector 15%, Finance – 17% and Ecommerce 14%. He in a very lucid and interesting manner gave the mantra for the factors affecting success of a startup: Idea, Team, Business Model, Funding and Timing where Timing plays the most significant role in the success of a startup and many startups in fact fail if they are ahead of time. It’s important to realize whether you are a problem creator or problem solver Lastly, he encouraged students by quoting that ‘If you are young you have to take more risk and you should not be a calculated one, just go all out and follow your gut instinct.’  This session was successfully coordinated by Dr. Bimal Solanki.
