Parent-Teacher Meeting 2014

SMPIC organized Parent-teacher meeting on 24th March 2014 at 9am. 120 parents along with their wards attended the meeting. Students who were achievers in academics, curricular and extra-curricular activities along with other students were also invited to attend the meeting along with their parents/guardians. An Audio Visual of all the achievements be it sports, drama, folk dance, fashion show, western dance, charity, university rankers etc of the year 2013-2014 was shown. Principal, Dr. Ashwin Purohit, in his address asked the parents to contribute to the success to college by giving their valuable suggestions. Parents were called on to give constructive suggestions and feedback of both parents and students was also taken during the course of meeting.

Industrial visit

An industrial visit for students is an essential element to enhance their practical knowledge along with their study. As a part of Industry – Institute interaction, S.M. Patel Institute of Commerce organized an industrial visit to Sardar Sarovar Dam and Baroda Dairy on 25th March 2014 . Total 51 students along with 3 faculty members and 1 administrative staff joined the visit. The trip was very useful and interesting as they had an opportunity to see power generation unit of Sardar Sarovar Dam as well as production and distribution of milk products in Baroda Dairy.

An Orientation Program

An orientation program for the first year students was organized on 26th July, 2013 at 9 am at GLS Auditorium. Dr. Ashwin Putohit, Principal, delivered his welcome address and explained the students the importance of extra-curricular activities and overall development of the personality. Students were acquainted with the curricular and extra-curricular activities of the college and the achievements of the college in the year 2012-13.

CWDC ACTIVITIES

CWDC Seminar on “Criminal Law Amendments Ordinance Act Under CWDC”

SMPIC organised a seminar on 16thsep. on “ CRIMINAL LAW AMENDMENTS ORDINANCE ACT UNDER CWDC” in ground floor class. Mr. Ankit Sharma(speaker Crime Branch ,Ahmedabad) was the speaker for the day. He informed girls about the amendments made in criminal law after Damini rape case. He made girls aware about implementation of new laws. Nearly 150 girls of FY, SY and TY participated in the seminar. The session also included question answer round.

Seminar on Solid Waste Management And Self Defense Technique Under CWDC

On 21st September 2013, SMPIC organised a seminar on solid waste management and self defense technique for girls in ground floor class. The initiative for the seminar was taken by police commissioner office Ahemedabad. Ms Asha Mehta made power point presentation on the seriousness of solid waste issue and acquainted the students about the various technique of managing solid waste . She also briefed about various self defense techniques to girls. Demonstration of the same was shown by her. Around 200 girls participated in the seminar.

Educational Tour Under CWDC

SMPIC, under CWDC organized an educational tour to Parvati Hills near Himmatnagar, on 11th January, 2014. The trip was enjoyed by around 56 students under the guidance of Prof. Mala Sharma and Prof. Gitanjali Rampal. If one wants to witness the magic created by nature, one needs to be a part of the flora and fauna and feel the scented aroma of air along with the chill feel of water. Prin. Dr. Ashwin Purohit’s basic idea behind organizing this trip was to sensitize the students towards nature. The students were involved in various activities like trekking and adventure sports under expert guidance of professional trekkers. The students were given information about various plants and trees and explained about their medicinal properties by the local people. At the end of the day, the students went to the jungle, fetched dry wood and lit a fire. They sang, danced, had food and shared their experience of the day during campfire. The students not only enjoyed thoroughly but the trip left an indelible impression on the young minds.

Dance Workshop

SMPIC organized a dance and fashion grooming workshop from 29th July to 6th August, 2013. Various dance forms were taught to the students. 150 students enthusiastically participated in the workshop. Students were taught Bollywood, jazz , grooming and Ramp walk by the renowned choreographers of the State. Principal Dr. Ashwin Purohit encouraged the students to participate in such workshop for their all round development. The entire workshop was organized and managed by Prof. Bimal Solanki, Prof. Bhavna Parwani and Prof. Aashal Bhatt.

Patriotic Song Competition

A competition of singing patriotic songs was organized on 12th August, 2013 at GLS auditorium. As much as 25 students were auditioned, out of which, 10 students were selected for the final performance. The competition was marked by the orchestra which consisted the students of SMPIC only. The student band worked very hard to accompany the singers with their music. Renowned musicians, Bhumik Shah and Mihir Jani were invited to judge the competition. Out of the 10 entries Bhaumik Bhatt bagged the 1st prize and Foram Parikh stood 2nd in the competition. .

Drama Workshop

SMPIC organized “ABHIVYAKTI: A FINISHING WORKSHOP IN THEATRE”, a complete theatre experience. The 5 days workshop was conceived by Prin. Dr. Ashwin Purohit and managed and organized by Abhishek Shah, Prof. Sneha Master and Prof. Gitanjali Rampal. The workshop was conducted at Rangmandal, Ellisbridge Aarogya Samiti, Pritiamnagar Akhada, Pritamnagar, Ahmedabad from 22nd July to 26th July, 2013.

The workshop dealt with basics of theatre, music, dance, creative writing and stagecraft. Various aspects of drama, including acting, voice modulation, breathing control and reflex enhancing were taught by the theatre enthusiasts and stalwarts like Mahesh Godheshwar, a National School of Drama pass out. There was an overwhelming response from different colleges of Ahmedabad. Around 110 students from various colleges participated and were benefited from the workshop.

The workshop took off with a sharing of the participants’ theatre related experiences in the past. Participants were briefly oriented about the evolution and history of theatre. The session helped provoke a rethink on the need of the kind of theatre and its scope among the youth. The sessions were enlivened by various theatre exercises and games which allowed inhibitions to drop even as it built in a discipline among the participants and demonstrate the same in their interaction with others.

Sessions in the following days invited participants to critically look at and challenge the current communication approaches and practices using theatre. There were sessions to demonstrate ways in which theatre can be enriched and applied as a tool, method and process moving beyond performances. Across the five days, the participants and facilitators together built an environment, which encouraged the participation of all. The participants themselves were thrilled with the space and opportunity to participate in sharing, learning and doing processes as equal partners. The formal sessions on story/script development, make-up, developing a character, acting and facilitation involved the participants in intense discussions, which flowed into the informal, out-of-class hours.

Participants integrated their collective understanding about development concerns as also their skills in scripting, costumes, make-up, acting and direction into their 90 minute performances on the last day. The workshop provided the space to affirm individual expression and a platform to share and collaborate. At the end, the students were also invited to see the professional performances of two plays “Priya Mitr” and “Tu Ladje Anamika” at Rangmandal on 1st August, 2013. Herein they were given the first-hand practical experience of various aspects theatre like lighting, music, set setting etc.

The students of various other colleges wholeheartedly appreciated SMPIC’s effort to organize a theatre workshop not only for SMPICITES but for students of other colleges also. They considered this workshop as a significant contribution to Gujarati Theatre. They have also requested to organize more than one workshop in a year.

SMPIC Theatre Achievement

SMPIC’s award-winning play “Tu Ladje Anamika”, written and directed by Shri Abhishek Shah, was invited to be performed at M.P.J.I.M.R. Auditorium, Bhavan’s Cultural Centre, Andheri, Mumbai on 3rd August,2013. A special sponsorship of Rs. 25,000 was awarded by Gujarat Rajya Sangeet Natak Academy for the performance. The students have been regularly giving professional performances of the play. The 13th show in Mumbai was a stupendous success and received standing ovation from the audience.

Charity Activities

Blood Donation Camp

SMPIC in association with Red cross society organized Blood Donation Camp on 5th August, 2013. 106 bottles were donated by the college

Prayas ‘Charity with Smile’

2nd January,2014 was celebrated as charity day by SMPICites. Under “Prayas”-charity with smile, SMPIC team including 50 students and faculty members visited two destinations i.e. Children Cancer Ward, Civil Hospital and Maniben Tribhuvandas Matrugruh- Old age home at Chandranagar, Paldi. At Old age home a kit containing daily usage items for old aged women and biscuits were distributed to 80 beneficiaries. At children Cancer wards toys were distributed to 90 patients.

Visit to Municipal School

SMPIC students along with faculty visited municipal school No. 26, Ambavadi on 7th Feb.,2014. Students spent a few hours sharing their experiences and entertaining school kids there. A kit consisting of stationery and buiscuits were distributed among the school children.

Nishulk Shikshan Sahayak Scheme

SMPIC teaches the poor students of 10th and 12th Std. of Sanand district under the Nishulk shikshan sahayak scheme free of cost since 2007-8. Students are given Note books and study material free of cost.

Facets 2014

The Institute organized the annual cultural festival FACETS-2014 at the Tagore Hall on 8th February, 2014. The theme for the show this year was “Retro” and students performed on all the Retro Peppy Numbers. The show was an amalgam of Dance, fashion and music and the audience was also dressed in the Retro attires as it was a “Retro” day as well. The judges and guests for the event included Shri Sudhirbhai Nanavati, Executive Vice President, GLS, Shri B.H.Joshi, Shri Vadibhai Patel, Ms.Rajika Kacheria, RJ Kunal Desai, Mr. Shail Desai and the Gujarati Rock Star Bhai- Bhai fame Shri Arvind Vegda.

Placement Meet

College organized campus placement for B. Com and M.com students for South Indian Bank and Economic Times on 16th August,2013.

‘Youngotsav 2013’- Inter Zonal Youth Festival 3rd and 4th October, 2013.

S. M. Patel Institute of Commerce hosted Gujarat University Inter-Zonal youth festival ‘Youngotsav 2013’ on 3rd and 4th October, 2013. Total 27 events were conducted at 7 different venues including College Campus, L. A. Shah College, GLS Skating Rink, GLS Auditorium, H. K. Hall and Thakorebhai Desai Hall. The Inauguration function was held at Thakorebhai Desai Hall. Shri Sudhir Nanavati, Executive Vice President, GLS, Dr. Mukul Shah, In-charge Vice Chancellor, Gujarat University, and Ms. Pooja Gor, TV Celebrity(‘Pratigya’ fame) and Alumni of SMPIC were among the dignitaries present at the occasion. In the inaugural speech principal, Dr Ashwin Purohit, S.M. Patel Institute of Commerce welcomed all and motivated the students to set high standards for themselves and actively participate in various events. Shri Sudhir Nanavati, in his speech, laid emphasis on the fact that such events brought out the innate abilities of students and that GLS has always focused on all-round development of students. Dr. Mukul Shah stressed on importance of such events for youth in present time in his address. The event had 1000 to 1200 student participants of different colleges affiliated to Gujarat University across Gujarat during these two days. About 127 colleges of 5 zones took part in Youngotsav. Competitions were organized during the two-day festival in the area of Music, Literary, Theatre, Dance and Fine Arts and winners of Zonal Youth Festival enthusiastically participated in various events. The Valedictory Function and Prize Distribution were organized at GLS Auditorium. Shri N. R. Shah, Executive Director, GLS, RJ Kunal, renowned Radio Jockey(Radio Mirchi) and Ex-SMPICite, Shri V. K. Chavda, Assist. Director, Youth Welfare Dept., Gujarat University and Dr.Ashwin Purohit, Principal, S. M. Patel Institute of Commerce graced the occasion.
