• An Alumni Meet and a Farewell for Sem-VI Students |
| SMPIC organised a Farewell for semester -VI students and an Alumni Meet for the past students. It was a fun-filled Evening. The Function started with a formal introduction of the event and students gave the feedbacks about their journey in SMPIC. The function was followed by a Musical Evening with all the peppy numbers. Crowd had a gala time dancing to their favourite tunes. It was a night to remember for the Batch about to graduate bidding final good bye to the alma mater. |
• PARENT-TEACHER MEET 2015 |
| SMPIC Parent Teacher meeting for the 2015 was held on 4th April in GLS auditorium between 9.00 am to 10:30 am. There were around 80 students along with their parents who attended the meeting. The function started with the welcome address by Principal Dr.Ashwin Purohit followed by introduction of Faculty members, Audio-Visual Presentation on glimpses of activities & achievements of 2014. At the end of the meet, parents gave constructive suggestions and appreciated the efforts and the involvement of Principal and Faculty members in all the academic as well as co-curricular activities. |
• Sports Day |
SMPIC enthusiastically celebrated Sports Day on 12th February, 2015 at Sheth C. N. Vidhyavihar in which more than 300 students participated in various sports and games like Sprint, Discuss Throw, Short Put, Long Jump, Lemon and spoon and musical chair. • Celebrating New Year With A Difference |
| To begin year with a difference students of SMPIC organized a drive to be a helping hand to the society. On 2nd January 2015, early in the morning at 5 a.m. students accompanied by two faculty members distributed warm/woolen clothes to the needy people sleeping on the footpath at different places of Ahmedabad like Shivranjani cross roads, Helmet cross roads & SAL Hospital. |
• Celebrating Christmas with a Difference |
With a view to inculcate value of Individual Social Responsibility in the students, S.M.Patel Institute of Commerce organized the “joy of giving activity” in an endeavor to make a Christmas Day Celebration special and reach out to underprivileged girls at Shree Jamnadas Bhagwandas Kanya Gruh (Hostel for Underprivileged girls from rural area of Ahmedabad District). 30 students and Faculty members from SMPIC went on 25th December to the Kanya Gruh to celebrate the joyous festival with them. The students decorated the Kanya Gruh, played one minute games and gave prizes. The students of Kanya Gruh danced and were very happy with our college students. Even a small Fashion show and Garba were organized for the students. One of the college students dressed up as Santa Claus and distributed gifts to all the students. The best moment of the celebration was cutting of the Christmas cake and having lunch with all the students of Kanya Gruh. The students of SMPIC parted by bringing a smile on the faces by distributing gift kit to each student (containing woolen scarf, foolscap books, pen, wallet, lotion, pins/clips, etc. ) and thus making 25thDecember 2014, a memorable day to remember in the life of Jamnadas Bhagwandas Kanya Gruh girls. Through this initiative, the underprivileged girls too got a chance to celebrate Christmas in its true spirit. It was a small gesture by the SMPIC students to express that they care for underprivileged too. |
• Mountaineering Camp |
| Krunal Shah and Rutul Vyas from SMPIC got selected by Gujarat University for Basic Mountaineering course-cum-camp at SVIM, Mount Abu managed by Government of Gujarat. It was organized from 22/05/2015 to 1/06/201. This basic course aimed at imparting professional training of mountain climbing, rappelling and technical basics to the students. It was a great experience for the students to explore mountaineering activity to the fullest. |
• TRAFFIC AWARENESS INITIATIVE |
| Under the valuable guidance of Principal Dr. Ashwin Purohit, the NSS volunteers of SMPIC undertook a Traffic Awareness Initiative at Shivranjani cross road on 3rd December,2014. Commuters were surprised to see that around 20 NSS volunteers stopped the traffic and distributed the pamphlets regarding traffic rules. All the commuters were given a Rose flower to motivate them to follow and support Traffic Police. At this program, even the DIG of Police Harekrushna Patel, ACP R.S.Sindhi, ACP R.M.Zala along with their team marked their presence and motivated the commuters and the NSS volunteers too. SMPIC NSS Volunteers team honoured the Officers with the token of appreciation for serving the society with full responsibility and dedication. Overall more than 500 vehicles were covered under this initiative and everyone praised such initiative taken by college students. |
• RUN FOR CLEANLINESS |
| To mark 26th January 2015 as a special day, SMPIC participated in “Run for Cleanliness”; an event organized by GLS. More than 800 students of SMPIC participated in the event to create awareness about Cleanliness among people of Ahmedabad. Run for Cleanliness commenced from Income tax cross roads and concluded at GLS Ground followed by Flag Hosting Ceremony. |
• Pledging For Swachh Bharat |
| Hon’ble Chief Minister of Gujarat Smt. Anandiben Patel addressed the students of GLS to commensurate cleanliness drive conducted by GLS on 30th January 2015. More than 800 students of SMPIC participated in the event. Students were encouraged and appreciated by Honourable Chief Minister for partnering the noble act of cleanliness. Executive Vice President Shri Sudhir Nanavati submitted 1,11,111 cleanliness pledges to Chief Minister. |
• “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan” |
SMPIC celebrated Cleanliness Drive on 2nd October 2014. Cleanliness Drive under ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ marked the celebrations of 145th birth anniversary of Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhiji in S.M. Patel Institute of Commerce. Gandhi Jayantiwas celebrated by Students, Faculty members and Administrative staff by undertaking cleanliness drive in the campus by cleaning staffrooms, classrooms, college premises& surrounding area. It was a huge success. |
• ‘Gnyan Saptah’ Celebration |
Under the celebration of ‘Gnyan Saptah’, SMPIC organized various events like ‘Poetry Recitation’, ‘Elocution’, ‘Yoga demonstration’ and ‘Carrom Tournament’ on 2nd September, 2014. Seven students participated in ‘Poetry Recitation’. The students recited various poems in English, Hindi as well as Gujarati languages. The recitation of poetry was followed by the discussion on the theme and meaning of the poems. Eleven students participated in ‘Elocution’ where in the students were asked to speak on the given topics. They were given five minutes for the preparation and three minutes for the delivery of speech. All the students took part enthusiastically. Prof. Bhavik Swadia, Asst. Professor in Accountancy, is also an expert in Yoga and Meditation. He explained the importance of Yoga and demonstrated various Yoga postures to the students. A tournament of Carrom was held in the college library. Sixteen students participated in the Tournament. The winners shall be given a certificate during the college Annual Function. ‘Swayam Shikshak Din’ was celebrated on 3rd September, 2014. in which 27 students participated and played the role of Teachers. The students enthusiastically participated in the celebration and taught the topics of their choice. On 4th September, 2014, SMPIC organized a Career Guidance Seminar. Principal Dr. Ashwin Purohit informed and guided the students of T.Y.B.Com. about various career options after B.Com. He briefed about the opportunities in Banking sector and also threw light on how the students can develop entrepreneurship quality for becoming self employed. 150 students were benefited from this session. |
• Charity ActivitiesInvitation to Municipal school children at SMPIC |
| Under the initiative ‘PRAYAS-charity with smile’, on 9th January 2015 SMPIC brought 25 children from Municipal school no 2., school no 18 and school no 26 to the institute by Faculty and students’ car. An entertainment program and games were organized in the campus. All the children were provided lunch and then after they were given surprise gifts. |
Visit to Cancer Ward at Civil Hospital |
| ‘PRAYAS-charity with smile’; is an attempt of SMPIC to contribute to the society and sensitize the students about social causes of the society. Under this noble cause, on 10th January, 2015 Faculty members and 40 students of SMPIC visited children Cancer ward at Civil Hospital and distributed toys and biscuits. |
• Blood Donation Camp |
| SMPIC in association with Red Cross society organized Blood Donation Camp on 21st August, 2014. 72 bottles were donated by the college. |
• ART CLUB |
| ART CLUB focuses on the core idea of ‘STUDENTS TEACH, STUDENTS LEARN’. The main objective is to encourage the students to come out with their hidden creative skills and to share and exchange their creative ideas. The Club organized the Fine Arts workshop from 16th January, 2015 in which 130 students participated enthusiastically. |

(A) PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP:Photography workshop was conducted by Mr. Haard Dave from 21st to 25th February, 2015 in which sixteen students participated. Students were given on field training of photography at Law Garden. A competition was held on the last day of the workshop amongst the students and the winners were awarded with the certificates. |
• Inter Class Fine Arts Competition 2014 |
| Inter Class Fine Arts competition was organized to provide platform to students to showcase their abilities in areas like On the Spot Painting, Rangoli, Poster Making, Collage and Cartooning on 13th and 14th August 2014.Many students participated in these activities and students were awarded with the certificate for 1st 2nd and 3rd position. |
CWDC ACTIVITIES |
• Orsang Visit |
| SMPIC organized an educational visit under CWDC to Orsang Park near Bharuch on 12th February, 2015. Around 63 students along with faculty members Dr. Mala Sharma and Prof.Gitanjali Rampal went for the visit. The visit was quite a learning as well as entertaining for the students as they participated in various adventurous activities like zip line, swing jump etc. |
• PINKATHON |
Pinkathon is a 10KM International run only for Women. The objective of the event is to encourage womens’ health and fitness. Pinkathon also aims to raise awareness about Breast Cancer, its causes and prevention. Pinkathon was held in Ahmedabad on 12th Oct, 2014 where more than 15K women gathered on a pleasant Sunday morning to run for a social cause. The marathon started at Sabarmati Riverfront. For the convenience of first timers 3Km, 5Km run were also set therein. 45 girls from SMPIC participated in the Pinkathon and successfully completed the 3Km and 5Km run and got an ‘I am a finisher’ medal and had a wonderful experience! |
• An Eye-Opening Seminar on Cyber Crime |
| A seminar on ‘Women Empowerment and Cyber Crime’ was organized by Cyber Cell, CID Crime & Railways, Police Bhavan, Gandhinagar, in Senate Hall, Gujarat University, on 12th August, 2014, Tuesday, at 11.00 am for various commerce colleges of Ahmedabad. Around 60 students of SMPIC along with Prof.Gitanjali Rampal participated in the seminar. The seminar was conducted in two sessions. In the first session the students were informed about women empowerment and different defensive techniques to save themselves from troublesome situations. Various helpline numbers were also given. They were further informed about the various cybercrimes, their modus operendi and the methods to curb them. In the second session, the students were informed about the various career options available in uniform services and their requirements. The sessions were followed by light refreshments. The seminar was very informative and eye-opening for students. |
• Theatre Workshop |
SMPIC successfully organized “ABHIVYAKTI: A FINISHING WORKSHOP IN THEATRE”, for the 5th consecutive year. The workshop was organised by Abhishek Shah, Prof. Sneha Master and Prof. Gitanjali Rampal under the able guidance of Prin. Dr. Ashwin Purohit. The five days workshop was conducted in the college premises from 31st July, 2014 to 4th August, 2014. The workshop dealt with basics of theatre, music, dance, creative writing and stagecraft. Various aspects of drama, including acting, voice modulation, breathing control and reflex enhancing were taught by the theatre enthusiasts and stalwarts like Rajoo Barot, Abhishek Shah, Mihir Upadhaya and Mahesh Ghodeshwar. Around 90 Students from SMPIC and various other colleges participated and were benefited from the workshop. Participants integrated their collective understanding about theatre skills in scripting, costumes, make-up, acting and direction into their performances on the last day. The workshop provided the space to affirm individual expression and a platform to share and collaborate. On the last day of the workshop, in the closing ceremony, Dr. B. H. Joshi, Registrar, GLS blessed the students with his insightful and motivating words. The certificates were distributed to the students and Prin. Dr. Ashwin Purohit guided the students with his enlightening speech. The workshop was a huge success. |
• Facets 2015 |
| SMPIC celebrated its Annual Culfest–“Facets 2015”s at Tagore Hall. In great style the show was a blend of Music, Western Dance and Fashion. The theme of this year’s show was BOLLYWOOD and the audience was also dressed in the BOLLYWOOD ATTIRE. Mr. ArvindVegda ‘Bhai Bhai’ fame, R.J. Krunal Desai of Radio Mirchi and Mr. Shail Desai, Director Page 3 events were the judges of the event. More than 120 students participated in the show amidst the round cheering of 900 plus audience. |

• Dance and Grooming Workshop |
| SMPIC organised Dance and Fashion Grooming Workshop. Various dance forms were taught to the students. This workshop was a big success as around 150 students enthusiastically participated in the workshop. Students were taught Bollywood, Jazz, Grooming and Ramp walk by the renowned choreographers of the State. All the student participants will be given a chance to perform in the College Cultural Festival ‘’Facets”. The entire workshop was coordinated by Prof. Bhavna Parvani, Prof. Aashal Bhatt and Prof. Bimal Solanki. Principal Dr. Ashwin Purohit is always enthusiastic about organising such workshops for holistic development of the students. |
• Orientation Programme |
| S.M. Patel Institute of Commerce organised an Orientation Programme for the students of Semester-1 and their parents on 22nd, 23rd and 24th July, 2014. The Programme was aimed at welcoming the new batch and at the same time orienting the students as well as parents about various activities, achievements, examination pattern etc. The students were also introduced to the faculty and administrative staff of SMPIC. Dr. B.H. Joshi, Registrar, GLS, Dr. N.D. Shah, Dean, Commerce faculty, Gujarat University and Shri Sudhirbhai Nanavati, Exe. Vice President, GLS were the chief guests during the three days programme respectively. |
| On the occasion, the principal, Dr. Ashwin Purohit, in his welcome speech, mentioned, “It is the Smart work which will lead you to success and not a mere Hard work”. He also guided the students for choosing the right career option according to their potential. |
| Shri Sudhirbhai Nanavati emphasised on the ‘clarity of goal’ in life and a determined pursuit towards that goal as the success mantra. He explained the importance of skill and knowledge in addition to degrees and certificates and added that excessive pressure of studies on the students can strangle their real talent and potential. He congratulated the Principal and staff of SMPIC for the several achievements during the last year and wished them good luck for the years to come. |
